Acceptance and Repayment of Agricultural Credit in Lombok Indonesia - Farmer's Perspectives AgEcon
Sjah, Taslim; Russell, Iean W.; Cameron, Donald.
This paper analyzes farmer decisions regarding acceptance and repayment of agricultural credit in Lombok, Indonesia. A survey was conducted during July 2001- March 2002 in Central Lombok, where the current KKP government credit scheme is provided to agricultural producers. Three villages within the regency were sampled, representing various repayment rates of government credit. Data were collected using face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with 65 farmers who had made use of government or other sources of agricultural credit. Capital possession was found to be the starting point for farmers' decision-making in relation to credit use. As long as farmers had their own capital, they tended to avoid using credit, perceiving that credit from any source was...

Brazil’s Minimum Price Policy and the Agricultural Sector of Northeast Brazil AgEcon
Fox, Roger W..
The effect pubic policy has on the relative prices of agricultural commodities is a controversial topic in developing countries, developed countries, and international agencies alike. The controversy arises as a result of a lack of understanding of the conflicting effects of relative price changes on various producer and consumer income classes and, when the effects are understood, as a result of emphasizing the value class over another. Unfortunately, there are a few case studies available on the workings of the many and varied approaches taken to agricultural price policy in the developing countries. IFPRI was delighted to take advantage of Roger Fox’s availability to make this study of the minimum price program of Brazil, as it applies to the...

CRÉDITO RURAL E INADIMPLÊNCIA NA FRUTICULTURA IRRIGADA DO PÓLO PETROLINA-JUAZEIRO AgEcon

Factors Contributing to the Performance of Agricultural Credit in Lombok Indonesia AgEcon
Sjah, Taslim; Cameron, Donald; Russell, Iean W..
In Indonesia, national historical records show increasing agricultural credit provision by government, yet farmers seem to be unable to escape poverty. In addition, the repayment of credit has tended to be lower as years proceed. This paper analyses the performance of credit in terms of agricultural production, farmers' earnings, and credit repayment, and factors contributing to the performance. The analysis is based upon a survey conducted in Central Lombok, where the current KKP government credit scheme is provided to agricultural producers. Three villages within the regency were sampled, representing various repayment rates of government credit. Data were collected using face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with 65 farmers who had made use of...

RISK IN AGRICULTURE AS IMPEDIMENT TO RURAL LENDING - THE CASE OF NORTH-WESTERN KAZAKHSTAN AgEcon
Petrick, Martin; Ditges, C. Markus.
On the basis of portfolio selection theory, this paper finds that whole-farm risk must be regarded as a major reason for the low level of credit flow to agriculture in North-western Kazakhstan. A quadratic programming model was used in order (a) to demonstrate the comparatively high overall risk exposition of a typical farm, (b) to show that an inflow of working capital could contribute to risk reduction, and (c) to illustrate short-term risk management strategies. Although there may be a role for the government in reducing risk exposition of agriculture in its current form, natural and economic constraints suggest to pave the way for structural reforms that reduce the importance of agriculture in the rural economy. .

Rural Financial Markets in Developing Countries AgEcon
Conning, Jonathan; Udry, Christopher R..
This review examines portions of the vast literature on rural financial markets and household behavior in the face of risk and uncertainty. We place particular emphasis on studying the important role of financial intermediaries, competition and regulation in shaping the changing structure and organization of rural markets, rather than on household strategies and bilateral contracting. Our goal is to provide a framework within which the evolution of financial intermediation in rural economies can be understood.
